By the 1940's Hollywood and the movie industry were
becoming a major social force in influencing attitudes about everything from household
appliances to sexuality. By the fifties the Hollywood sex queen was an established icon
and American women were being influenced heavily by Hollywood dress, custom, and
attitudes. The bullet bra also hit the scene in the fifties as did the buxom starlets of
Hollywood lore. Female breasts were popping out everywhere in the media and the concept of
sexy and sexy breasts were becoming firmly intertwined. In the late fifties, Playboy
magazine hit the stands and along with its imitators, male adolescents everywhere were
being exposed to female breasts and new definitions of what was sexy. In the early days of
men's magazines and Hollywood sex starlets, female models were generally large breasted
and since these women exuded sexuality in every other respect, large breasts were becoming
synonymous with sex appeal. Bra's began to lose their role as functional dress and were
becoming sexual accents and fashion accessories. The latest fashion designs from the
runways of New York and Paris seemed to keep finding clever ways each year to expose more
of the female breast. Almost single handedly, Madonna, our most famous pop icon of
the past two generations, revealed to us that the bra was no longer an undergarment and
was more appropriate as outer-wear. The bullet bra gave way to the padded bra which gave
way to the uplift bra. The bikini also appeared over forty years ago which exposed even
more of the female breast and within two decades, bathing suit tops had become so small,
they had almost become invisible. Also, by the late 90's, the sports bra was appearing
worldwide in the world's most famous sporting events as a commonplace outer garment.
Only a small number of people may have watched the US women's team win the world
cup soccer championship, but millions around the world saw "the sports bra" at
the end of the competition. So what could the new millenium bring? Perhaps we
will see the world's first cyberbra or even cyberbust!
Breast Trends
From a biological viewpoint, female breasts play a minor
role in the initial reproductive process. Although essential to the propagation of the
species as a source of food for the newborn, the importance of breast feeding has been
technologically minimized. As a sexual response organ, the breast plays an important role
but no more than the hundreds of other erogenous zones widely spread over the female body.
Nevertheless, as a sexual attractor, the female breast can nearly lay claim to the top
spot and remains high on the male wish list of desirable sexual attributes in a female. In
some respects, this is a peculiar American tradition with roots in many complex social
factors, not the least of which is a long-standing belief that bigger of anything is
always better. This "bigger-is better" trend began with the colonization of the
West during the post-colonial days of American expansionism and continues today with the
obsessive propagation of merger-i-tus by American corporations. Thus, Americans have a
long heritage of always bragging about having the biggest something. Perhaps some of this
historical American tradition of expansionism has mutated into a social concept or
set of cultural beliefs that the female with the biggest breasts is the sexiest and most
desirable.

Ultimately, the media must share some of the blame for the
big breast syndrome in two respects. First, women who are depicted as sexy quite often are
also women who are full-busted and it is no coincidence that males usually run the movie,
T.V. and other media industries. The not so subtle influence of television on the
perception of what is desirable in breast size is quite new, but incredibly powerful. You
may remember that during the fifties, Undergarment advertisements did not contain images
of women in bras, only images of empty bras. Of course all that has changed now and with
the advent of cable T.V., exposed breasts seem to be everywhere on cable, satellite and
even network channels. Furthermore, the number of famous and not so famous actresses
who have had their breasts surgically enhanced reads like a list of "who's
who"! The terms "spokesmodel" and "supermodel" are now
common household words with an attached concept that implies importance, attractiveness,
and desirability. The spokesmodel and the supermodel are role models for millions of
young girls and young women.
Whoever coined the term "boob tube" probably didn't realize
that it would become a literal translation. You can do your own survey. Watch any
broadcast medium of your choice and notice how many women you see depicted in sexy roles
also happen to have small breasts. Either by design or by accident, full-sized breasts has
become synonymous with sex appeal. The majority of the male population seems to have
accepted this belief without further thought or consideration. Although women may hate
this artificial ideal, most women, as well as men, wish to look and feel desirable to the
opposite sex. So it is not surprising then that large numbers of women feel a need to
enhance their breasts in some way, shape, or form in order to appear more desirable to
men.
Staying Young and Firm
"The Eternal Quest for Youth"
Finally, the entire media industry also plays a large role
in shaping attitudes about our worth in society. The current trend is to emphasize the
superiority of youth: looking young, feeling young, acting young, and being young. Of
course, this is maddeningly frustrating to everyone over the age of thirty because
everyone who lives long enough is eventually going to get old. The older population
may have more knowledge, more experience and even more money, but are still frequently
ignored by policy makers and advertising media .
The multi-billion dollar industries in nutrition, fashion, health, weightloss, fitness,
thousands more and even the automotive industry target their approach to those who are
young and those who want to appear young. The message is almost always: Being
old is not cool. Being young or at least looking young is COOL! And often
connected with this message is not only to look young but to look sexy with sexy breasts.
There seems to be a general social concept in society that the only way to get sexy
breasts is to either be born with them or undergo plastic surgery but this is actually
nothing more than a well oiled and heavily promoted marketing machine.

The medical profession benefits too, especially the various
divisions of plastic surgery. Despite the risks and costs involved, over a million women a
year have breast implants and the majority of those are elective. Furthermore, most of
those involve implants to achieve larger breasts. Female breast shape and size peaks by
the age of 18 and it is all downhill shortly thereafter. Certainly one way to have firm
and youthful looking breasts is to buy them, even though that option can carry an
extremely high price paid in both dollars and personal health.
Another Alternative
What should women do? Many women choose to do nothing
about their breasts. Most women probably should not do anything drastic with their
breasts. Large numbers of women who have breast surgery do not have excessively small
breasts; they just want larger ones. For the majority of women who would simply like to
enhance their breast size and youthful look, without totally restructuring the entire
breast by placing foreign objects inside their body, there has been only one other option.
The external look of the breast can be nicely enhanced by uplift bras and various types of
